Urolithin A is a metabolite produced by gut bacteria from ellagitannins found in pomegranates and walnuts. It is currently the only known compound clinically proven to trigger mitophagy—the recycling of damaged mitochondria.
Why Mitophagy Matters
As we age, our mitochondria become “leaky,” producing reactive oxygen species (ROS) instead of ATP. Urolithin A activates the Pink1/Parkin pathway, identifying these failing power plants and marking them for destruction, making room for healthy, high-output mitochondria.
Clinical Applications
- Muscle Endurance: Improved mitochondrial health translates directly to better muscle recovery.
- Cognitive Function: Neurons are highly dependent on mitochondrial efficiency.
